A Simple Meditation Practice
POSTED ON:08.07.07 @ 10:06 AM    BY: Rick Watson
A meditation practice is simple and practical. It is impossible to do wrong. It is the simple process of observing our thoughts, emotions and sensations without identifying with them. In doing so, we develop compassion for ourselves, and in turn, we can discover our true nature.

How to do it:

1. Sit up straight in a chair with feet flat on the floor. You can also sit cross legged on any flat spot.
2. Close your eyes
3. Begin by becoming aware of your breath
4. Say quietly to yourself "in" when you inhale and "out" when you exhale.
5. If you find your attention wandering, simply say "thought" to yourself and bring your attention back to your breathing. You may wish to label the thoughts as planning, judging, future, past, fantasy, etc. You may simply use the word thought if you wish. If you begin to judge yourself, simply say "thought" or "judgment" and return your attention to the breath.
6. Acknowledge any sensations in your body by saying "sensation" and returning your attention to the breath. Do the same with emotions or feelings that may occur.

Disengaging From The Judge

I've found myself, over the last couple of days, falling into some old habits that I thought for sure I wouldn's see again, having given great thought to New Year's resolutions designed to rid myself of them. But yet, here I sit, procrastinating instead of accomplishing. Until a very calm voice in my head tells me, "That was the old you that procrastinated."

That was the old you. And suddenly I free and back on task. No inner recriminations, no further delays of talking myself through what to do next. Just a sudden relaxation into action when I realized, "That was the old me that had that pattern. The new me, the 2007 me, doesn't." It's not even an issue.

When you find ourself in the next day, week or month, inhabiting an old pattern, gently remind yourself, Oh, that was the old me, the new me doesn't have that habit.

Let me know what happens!
